Nigerian Afro-fusion star Asake slows things down on “Weekend,” a breezy, sun-drenched Afro-pop single with a Highlife feel about taking a break and enjoying the fruits of your labour.
The song is about work-life balance and stepping away from the Lagos hustle to rest. Asake plays a hard-working star who knows when to pause, protect his peace, and enjoy good company. His lines are playful and relatable, full of Yoruba expressions, Pidgin street logic, and easy humour.
Smooth, cascading acoustic guitar riffs and a warm, bouncy bassline move with gentle percussion, crisp shakers, and mellow brass. Instead of his usual loud chants and thunderous choral stacks, Asake uses soft melodic vocal layers and an easygoing, conversational flow. His delivery is smooth and buoyant, and the hook feels like an instant feel-good classic.
If you need a song to close out a long week, “Weekend” is the perfect companion. Play it on a Friday evening, at a hangout, or on a lazy Sunday when you want to unwind.
