Nigerian singer Rybeena steps into deeply soulful and culturally rich territory with the song “Carried Away (Oke Agba)”
“Carried Away” speaks to the experience of being so consumed by a feeling so overwhelming that everything else falls away and you find yourself somewhere you could not have reached on your own.
And “Oke Agba” the Yoruba phrase meaning the Ancient of Days, anchors that experience in something timeless and immovable, giving the song a cultural and spiritual depth that sets it apart from almost everything else in its space right now.
There is a freedom in the way he sings this song that feels genuinely unrestrained, like an artist who has stopped trying to sound a certain way and simply allowed the music to move through him in whatever direction it needed to go.
The production honors both worlds the song inhabits, blending contemporary Nigerian sound with traditional Yoruba musical sensibility in a way that feels organic rather than calculated. Nothing about the arrangement sounds like a compromise between two styles.
